Pétillant naturel (Pét-nat) is the oldest method of making sparkling wine. It is also known as the méthode ancestrale or ancestral method. This technique involves bottling cider that is still fermenting to trap carbon dioxide in the bottle, creating a gentle carbonation.
Around 1650, the Rhode Island Greening apple received its name from what is now known as Middletown, in Newport County, Rhode Island. Owner and proprietor of a tavern located in Green’s End, Mr. Green, aptly named Green’s Inn, started the trees from seed. He often gave scions of the apple for visitors to graft and cultivate elsewhere. The Rhode Island Greening is one of the oldest American varieties, and the most popular apple known throughout the nineteenth century.
