Port-style wine (Ruby Port) made from Merlot and Noiret grapes, which was fortified with high proof brandy to stop the fermentation, resulting in natural residual sugar and 20% alcohol, then aged in French neutral oak barrels for softness and complexity. Aromas and flavors are star anise, nutmeg, white pepper, and orange. This fortified wine is a great dessert wine and pairs well with blue cheese, cheesecake, walnuts, dark chocolate, and deserts.
Officially, Port wine comes only from Portugal; this is why we call ours Forte´, which translates to fortification or strong. The British built Fort Venango in 1760 to control passage from French Creek to Allegheny River. In 1763 the fort was attacked and destroyed by Seneca Indians during Pontiac's uprising.
