This is a magical wine, an intense expression of vibrant fruit, interwoven with grey clay and autumnal aromatics. Summer flowers dried on an old leather saddle, future nostalgia, a enchanting melody of resilient vines and dedicated people. Each year, we pick the grapes for this wine on the autumnal equinox, hence the name. This wine is made from the oldest vineyard in NH (maybe in the northeast!), with the oldest plantings dating to 1969. The original owner of this vineyard planted this vineyard to sell grapes to the first commercial winery in NH in the '70s. When that winery closed, the owner continued to farm the vineyard, making his own wine in his garage. In 2020, when he turned 90 years old, he called us up and asked if we could take over farming his tiny half-acre vineyard, so he could retire. We are honored to be entrusted with this historic vineyard, which sits at 912ft on a north facing slope, and offer this wine as a dedication to the 8000 year tradition of winegrowing, of which we are only a tiny part. The wine is a whole-cluster co-fermentation of DeChaunac, Marechal Foch, Marquette, Prairie Star, and Louise Swenson for 20 days before being pressed into a old oak barrel. Spontaneous/wild fermentation, spontaneous malolactic fermentation. No sulfites added.
