Meet Scrappy Dog #6, the latest offering in our line of micro-micro-batch (sic) dry hard ciders (see below)! To make this exciting -- and rare -- batch (only 3 barrels!), we paired the aged lees from our 2021 and 2022 blending projects with foraged local heirloom apples, notably Newtown Pippins and Golden Russets. We also used Jonathans -- a fine early American variety -- which we haven't used in our ciders often. The resulting cider is full-bodied and complex, at once fruity and subtly tangy. Those familiar with our "gentle sour" Firefly cider blends will love Scrappy Dog #6.
The Back Story: Meet Preston, our scrappy dog, found wandering at the Mexican border and shipped to New York for adoption (#dogrescue). Preston may be small, but he’s stubborn and has a big personality, which might explain his survival. It’s why New York Cider Company chose him as mascot for our SCRAPPY DOG series, created for when we blend a compelling, often experimental, cider and only have a wee amount. In the past, we consumed these dry artisanal ciders ourselves, with family and friends. But how fair is that? Now, without the big production, we can bottle and share them with you forthwith.
